McMinnville boasts a charming downtown district with boutique shops and art galleries. The town also has a thriving wine industry, attracting many visitors.
Those who want to see a lasting impression left by the Wortman family should visit Wortman Park, located at 3rd and Davis, where Key Bank currently stands. A great post ahead.
The History of Wortman Park
Located in the heart of McMinnville’s Granary District, Wortman Park has a long history in the community. The main ridge-top trail was improved primarily by the GVR and with the help of Bozeman Rotary Club, local grade school students, MSU college students, and neighborhood residents in the mid-nineties. The Jerome Playground and the Wortman Spur Trail which connects to the ridge trail were added later.
The prominent location, large size, and fine detailing of the house reflect the stature of the family that built it and the significant role they played in McMinnville’s growth. The home is one of only a few remaining on the street where it was originally built. The family’s lasting impression is evident throughout the town, including Key Bank, which was founded by Jacob Wortman, and the First National Bank of McMinnville established in 1883. There are also many Wortman descendants still living in the area. In 1902 the family purchased the first automobile on the West Coast, a Locomobile.
Disc Golf Course
A great city park course that can challenge players of all skill levels. Very well maintained with plenty of holes and tees. Mostly wooded with a creek running through the park. Lots of tight trees but also some open fairways. The course parallels walking paths throughout the park so be careful of pedestrians (they have the right of way).
Disc golf is a fun, fast-growing sport that is similar to traditional golf. Participants throw a disc (similar to a Frisbee) towards a “hole” which is usually a basket with a chain hanging from it. Each hole is played from a different tee, and the goal is to get the disc into the basket in the fewest number of shots.
Portland Parks & Recreation is pausando temporalmente el Proyecto de Disc Golf en el Parque John Luby. This action is a strategic and cost-effective way to address the needs of our system of parks, the expectations of our community, and the workload for our staff. Picnic Shelters
In addition to Wortman Park, McMinnville has a number of other parks and recreational facilities. Harold Taylor Park is a pocket park with a shady picnic spot by Cozine Creek, Discovery Meadows Community Park boasts an award-winning park design with a “spray park” water feature and climbing wall for kids and adults, Thompson Park offers views of the surrounding farmland hillsides, and West McMinnville Linear Park provides a dedicated off-street corridor with a paved path that extends over a mile long.
The city also has a public library, an Aquatic Center, and a senior center. Patrons of these facilities are subject to the regulated hours and regulations of those specific facilities. McMinnville also has a growing school district and two Institutions of Higher Education: Chemeketa Community College and Linfield University.
Softball Fields
In the heart of Oregon wine country, McMinnville is a city with a growing business district, an award-winning hospital, and two Institutions of Higher Education: Chemeketa Community College and Linfield University. McMinnville is also home to numerous parks, restaurants, and wineries.
In downtown, historic brick businesses stand side-by-side with newer establishments, each preserving the legacy of the past. Several of the town’s historical buildings are within the McMinnville Historic District, where 64 historic properties are in 14 easy-to-walk blocks.
McMinnville is a safe and affordable place to call home. Average home prices are lower than the national average, making homeownership possible for many families. In addition, a wide variety of local banks and credit unions provide residents with a choice of financial options. For those who prefer to rent, McMinnville has a number of rental communities, including Meadowbrook Apartments, which is located right off Highway 99W and within walking distance of several amenities. Meadowbrook offers 16 1 bedroom/1 bath units and 32 2 bedroom/1 bathroom units. Next article.
